On the east side of Yosemite National Park at the foot of Tioga Grade is the charming little town of Lee Vining and the broad, spectacular expanse of Mono Lake. Around the west and south shores of Mono Lake are otherworldly tufa rock formations. Just south of Mono Lake is Panum Crater, which errupted just 600 years ago. The southern continuation of volcanic peaks radiating south from Panum Crater is Mono Craters, the youngest mountain chain in North America. The whole area is packed with surreal topographic features, and I spend time there every summer. I’ll add notes about particular locations.
